How to teach basketball to kids

Scoring System

It is easy to understand the score system. Except for fouls, all baskets within the key and within the three-point line will score 2 points. If the foul occurs, shots from beyond the three-point arc will score 2 points. Three points will be awarded for every basket made from the three point arc or beyond.

Offensive and defensive teams

Two teams are playing against each other, with five members taking active roles during game time. As a buffer or replacement, there are 4-5 additional players. The offensive team is the team in possession of the ball. The defensive team is the team trying to get the ball.

The defensive team must try to stop the other team scoring a basket. You cannot grab any part of the opponent’s body or hand while defending. Pushing or pulling at other players is not allowed. You cannot tap the ball in the opponent’s hand. You can move the ball in midair and score for your team, or pass it on to another member of your team.

The ‘Man to Man defense’ is the basis of most games. One player can only be assigned to one opponent. This allows for discipline and eliminates confusion. An opponent who is very good at dribbling will be assigned a member of the team who is skilled at checking out the ball while dribbling. If one of the opponents are very tall, he will be checked by a tall member of the team. This helps to balance out any drawbacks.

The Basic Rules of Kids

The first rule of basketball is how you dribble it. When it comes to basketball, there are some basic rules that must be observed. These are listed below.

When dribbling, the most important thing to remember is that you shouldn’t hold the ball with both hands while moving with the ball.

To avoid any movement, the player must stop holding the ball with both hands and place his feet on the ground.

If a player leaves one leg free to move while the other is stopped at the point of stopping, it’s called the pivot stance. Once he has stopped at a spot, he will be required to pass the ball to another player or attempt to make a basket.

If the player is caught running with the ball and not dribbling, it’s considered a ‘Traveling Violation. A double dribble violation occurs when a player grabs the ball using both hands. The possession of the ball is transferred from the violating team to the opposing team after each violation.

Sometimes the possession of the ball may be lost. In these cases, the player may pass, shoot or hold it by kneeling down in protective posture. The ball will stay in the possession of the player until someone takes it away or the referee stops it.

The ball can’t be carried by the player who is in possession of it. This is known as a ‘Carrying-Violation’.

While dribbling, the player who has the ball can switch his hands. This prevents an opponent from slipping the ball out of control.

The ball must stay within the boundary line of the court, while ait’s within the possession of the offensive player, else it constitutes an ‘Out-of-Bounds-Violation’.

When the offensive player who has the ball is trying to return the ball from his offensive side to his defensive side, it’s called a “Backcourt Violation”. Only the defensive team can bring the ball in so that the offensive team can return to its own court.

Fouls are punished

*Defensive team players must ensure that they don’t commit any foul. Any defensive team player who tries to touch an offensive player and interferes with their shot will be called foul. If the shot is attempted beyond the 3-point line, the penalty includes 2 free shots from center and 3 shots from the free zone.

  • If 6 fouls other than basket are committed by the defense team within a quarter, the offensive team receives 2 free shots at the free throw line.
  • If a player commits 5 fouls during the game, he will be removed from the game.

These can be followed while the child is playing with their parents, or with a group. You can play the game between 1-1, 2-2, or 4-4 depending on how many kids are available. Children can play a half-court game to learn how to shoot from the key or D-section. This will improve their shooting skills.
